How I Buy New (or Used) Books

When buying new books there are certain things I try to look for. Some things are super crucial whereas some can sometimes be overlooked. I know you aren't supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I do. And usually, it works out well for me.

Certain Fonts: If a book has a a curly, super bolded or any weird font, I try to stay away. For some reason fonts with curly letters tend to be more amateur authors and tend to be not as good in my experience. It needs to be clean, and understandable and I have to be able to read its spine easily.

Authors Name: If the authors' name is bigger than the title then usually they are trying to get you to recognize their name and rely on past fame to try to get you to buy the book. I see this is a lot of murder mysteries (usually older ones). And despite them trying to recognize their name, usually, I don’t and so I steer far away from them.

Motion Picture Cover: I guess this one isn’t really that big of a deal, but I just don’t prefer this cover. Generally, the book is great, I mean they made it into a movie or series, so it must be good! but, I prefer to have the original cover over the motion picture one. Like I said, not that big of a deal, just not preferred.

Appealing Covers: Covers that look good automatically draw me in. Thats just how it works.

Writers of the Review: I picked up a horro book a few weeks back and inside had a review by Stephen King, I automatically knew it was good based off of the great review he left. You usually don’t want someone like that the author has a personal relationship with, like their mom. As funny as that would be, it is probably biased.

If It Is A Series: I cannot tell you how many times I found an interesting book at a used book store, only to buy it and find out it is the third in the series. Based off of the synopsis I couldn’t tell. So now they sit on my book shelf hoping I buy the previous books so I can later read the book I bought unknowingly. Make sure you know if it is in the middle of a series you haven't started or don't own.

Until Next Time,

M
